Ongoing challenges in this regard include:The ‘technical debt’ - caused by maintaining legacy systems beyond their life expectancy, many of which are siloed from the wider infrastructure and so block the ongoing convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT).Many OESs are keen to explore emerging technologies like AI and ML - but such digital investments must be deployed on converged environments that will optimise their availability, output, and efficiency, delivering real-time insights that drive effective decision-making through edge IoT.In a turbulent geopolitical landscape - a ‘defence-in-depth’ approach to security is required, encompassing staff, processes, and systems, along with identifiable risks and mitigations based on the Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures, (TTPs), and Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) utilised by bad actors.OESs’ compliance obligations are evolving - with the IEC-62443 standard, the new Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, the NCSC NIS 2018 directive, and CAF V4 setting out minimum best practice around the security and resilience of mission-critical infrastructure, ultimately resulting in lives saved.
