Why carrier diversity alone doesn’t guarantee network resilience

With a diverse range of SaaS and Cloud platforms now firmly established across corporate workflows and AI continuing to reveal its true potential in the workplace, the demand for highly secure, resilient, and available connectivity has never been higher. When the foundational connectivity that connects organisations to their colleagues, partners, and customers becomes unavailable, it's more than an inconvenience. Even the shortest periods of downtime can result in serious financial, operational, and reputational consequences, particularly when we consider the increasingly stringent compliance landscape around the availability of critical services.

London experienced this first-hand in late 2025, when an underground fire at Holborn led to around 2,000 people being evacuated and outages lasting as long as fifteen days. Businesses relying on single circuits for their networking were the most heavily affected, as repairs were not possible until the fires were contained.

This highlights the value of true resilience when it comes to the connectivity businesses depend on. By 'true resilience', we don't just mean the ability to detect and mitigate security issues and operational risks (as important as that is), but also the ability to recover from major external disruptions like the Holborn fire that no-one could have predicted.

As with most aspects of digital infrastructure, redundancy is key here. There should be no single point of failure in any area of an organisation's foundational network. For this reason, many organisations have opted for carrier diversity across their network design - the practice of utilising connections from multiple providers with failover measures in place to maintain continuity in the event of any disruption.

This approach is certainly effective much of the time, but it has its limitations, as many organisations affected by the Holborn outages found to their cost. Often, connections from different providers are deployed along the same routes under the streets, which means that an unexpected disruption can affect several simultaneously, leaving organisations who depend on them without their networks and unable to do business.

In addition to carrier diversity, geographical diversity should be factored into network design, with redundant connections deployed along dispersed routes as much as possible. Ideally, network providers should be able to provide this as part of the proposed network design, which will allow multiple suppliers to be consolidated, for better efficiency and cost control.

This reflects the shifting role of connectivity, as organisations increasingly view it as a powerful driver of innovation and growth rather than a simple operational expense, particularly as SaaS, Cloud, and AI platforms further establish themselves as critical business tools.
